Tales From the Secret Garden of Cobwebs and Grapevines EP by Kneel Review

Tales From the Secret Garden of Cobwebs and Grapevines EP from Manchester artist Kneel has been classified as “Accidental Folk Punk”. It is a raw, intense, emotional ride through almost tribal drum tracks, ethereal guitar with a voice in possession of a distinctive edgy sound.

Kneel are comprised of Neil Roddy and Paul Pritchard, the team has managed to capture pain, fear, love and release in this short-tracked EP.

The startling first track of the EP, “Daddy I Was Shouting For You” puts the feelings of a father whose child has cancer into music, from the child’s perspective. Written a a time when singer Neil Roddy’s daughter was undergoing chemotherapy, its raw lyrics and gritty vocals evoke the fear that his daughter must have been feeling. Fortunately, his daughter is now in remission. Emotional and thought-provoking, this is a brave song to begin Tales From the Secret Garden of Cobwebs and Grapevines EP, for so many reasons.

The second track, Goodness and Love, begins with a sweltering southern blues guitar riff, has a religious feel. It is reminiscent of Johnny Cash’s more spiritual moments, of a man toiling through troubled and confusing times drawing comfort from the bible and his God.

Renegade Monk is the third track on the EP and has a distinctive Irish Style punk feel, bringing to mind The Pogues or Dropkick Murphy’s with a fun, light beat. It’s a good knockabout tale tale of a monk looking to fall in love and get married.

The final track of the EP, entitled Smile is about living a life of giving and loving, caring for our fellow man even when we feel uncared for and neglected. Its haunting refrains bring to mind the desperation we feel when in one sided relationships, whether romantic or spiritual. The song opens up into a broad and deep harmonized bridge that serves as a path between the listener and the musician.

Available through California based Indie label, MMLJ records, the new Kneel EP, Tales From the Secret Garden of Cobwebs and Grapevines, is a beautiful, soulful, thought-provoking listen. Listen to the EP at Kneel’s Bandcamp page.
