Tacoma Narrows Band Good Mourning Review

Tacoma Narrows Band Good Mourning is their debut album, released in 2015 after a successful Kickstarter campaign raised over $20,000 to fund its recording. This is no mean feat and is testimony to growing popularity of this energetic folk-rock sextet. Founded by lead singer, guitarist, principle songwriter and former English teacher, Cheny Munson, Tacoma Narrows are based in New York. The line-up is completed by: Will Roble (drums), Kesuke Shoji (fiddle), Arda Kosar (bass), Joe Harris (electric guitar) and Jonah Chilton (mandolin).

The first thing that has to be said about Tacoma Narrows Band Good Mourning is that in spite of the title, this isn’t the type of shoe-gazing, lightweight and downright miserable folk-rock of the kind peddled by some of their contemporaries. The sheer adrenaline and gusto with which the music is performed marks the band as being a cut above that. However, neither should the raucous performances on here fool you into thinking that the band is bunch of smiley happy folk with their heads in the clouds. Make no mistake, you can hear steel and substance to the music and an undercurrent of tragedy to the songs. The trick is, the songs never allow the listener to wallow in self-pity but encourage trouble to be faced directly as an inevitable part of life.

Take the single, This is How it Starts, for example. “We won’t have to hold on / We won’t have to wait / We won’t have to slow down / Cause this is how it starts” goes the chorus as we are told of the effects of a storm which has everybody running for cover at the beginning but emerging by the end of the song to look at the sky.

Tacoma Narrows Band Good Mourning – This Is How It Starts

Tacoma Narrows Band Good Mourning album crackles with an energy that would be the envy of most punk bands yet the musicianship displays real subtlety. The songs are well-written that stick to the folk tradition of telling a story Gritty in places, emotional in others but always entertaining. This is a fine debut from Tacoma Narrows and we look forward to more from this band.

You can sample some of the songs on Good Morning for nothing at Tacoma Narrow’s Soundcloud page and we heartily recommend you do!
